Meghan Markle’s favourite film revealed: Why the Duchess loves this cheesy US teen flick
Meghan Markle, 37, may now be the Duchess of Sussex, but that hasn’t stopped her from staying close to her US roots.
In her now-closed lifestyle blog The Tig, Meghan discussed with readers what her favourite film was.
The former actress revealed that she is a big fan of one US teen flick, in particular, Bring it On.
On her blog, Meghan spoke of how much she loved the naughties cheerleader movie.
Bring it On came out in 2000, starring big Hollywood names at the start of their careers, such as Kirsten Dunst, Eliza Dushku, Jesse Bradford and Gabrielle Union.
The cult classic focuses on a cheerleading squad from a California high school, who’s former captain is accused of stealing a routine from a rival high school.
The two schools then go head-to-head in a cheerleading competition, with the film full of classic US teen flick moments.
Growing up in Los Angeles and attending an all-girls high school, the Duchess may have had similar experiences to the characters in Bring it On.
Possibly having a bit of a fangirl moment, Meghan met Bring it On actress Gabrielle Union at a Prada event during New York fashion week.
Meghan reportedly said she “will always think fondly of her days in the cheerleading guilty pleasure Bring It On”.
The 37-year old also praised her then fellow actress for being “gracious, funny and refreshingly real”.
Meghan’s now-closed lifestyle blog gave many insights into her life when she was living in Toronto and acting in the US TV legal drama Suits.
The blog was named after another favourite of Meghan’s, her favourite wine Tignanello.
She closed the blog in April last year after things became more serious with Prince Harry.
Shutting down the site, Meghan wistfully wrote: “After close to three beautiful years on this adventure with you, it’s time to say goodbye to The Tig.
“What began as a passion project (my little engine that could) evolved into an amazing community of inspiration, support, fun and frivolity.”
Another thing Meghan shared on her lifestyle blog was the intimate details of her carefree 2015 trip to New Zealand.
Unlike the trips she will now encounter as a royal, Meghan rented a camper-van with a friend, touring the North and South Island.
Activities such as hiking, fishing, swimming with dolphins and lots of eating and drinking were all shown on her blog.
A known wine lover, she also visited the wine region of Marlborough, revealing “this region was a definite win for me”.
Who is Meghan Markle? Quick profile
Meghan Markle was born Rachel Meghan Marle, on August 4, 1961 to parents Doria Ragland and father Thomas Markle.
Her father was previously married to Roslyn Loveless and Meghan has two elder half sibling – sister Samantha Markle and brother Thomas Markle Junior.
Meghan’s first television appearance in the USA was in an episode of the medical drama General Hospital in 2002.
She later moved on to roles in CSI, Without a Trace and Castle along with bit parts in Hollywood films including Get Him to the Greek, Remember Me and Horrible Bosses.
Meghan was also a “briefcase girl” on Deal or No Deal – but her most famous role was as Rachel Zane in legal drama Suits, which launched in 2011.
She was written out in the finale of the seventh series when her character got married, which aired in April 2018 – just before she got married herself.
Charity and humanitarian work
Meghan Markle’s career in television has gone hand-in-hand with her support for causes close to her heart.
She wrote about the stigma around menstrual health in an article for Time magazine and was a Global Ambassador for World Vision Canada – with whom she travelled to Rwanda for the charity’s Clean Water Campaign.
And her commitment to gender equality has seen her work with the United Nations – receiving a standing ovation in 2015 for her speech to mark International Women’s Day.
In September 2011, she wed film producer Trevor Engelson, who she began dating in 2004.
But the pair divorced two years later in August 2013, citing irreconcilable difference.
She was in a relationship with celebrity chef Cory Vitiello for almost two years, before they broke it off in 2016 but the two remain good friends.
And in June 2016, she met Prince Harry on a blind date set up by a mutual friend.
Their relationship began in October that year and just over one year later, on November 27, 2017, the pair announced their engagement.
They married on May 19, 2018 at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.
Some have claimed Meghan Markle is the first mixed-race member of the Royal Family.
Historians are still arguing about Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III.
But Meghan will be the first royal to openly embrace a mixed-race heritage.
She has written about the difficulties of being a biracial actress in Hollywood as she claims she is not black enough for some roles and not white enough for others.
