TNT confirmed that its gritty period crime drama would be returning for another outing that would be adapted from author Caleb Carr’s 1997 novel The Angel of Darkness.
In a statement, TNT’s executive vice president of original programming Sarah Aubrey said: “We could not be prouder of The Alienist’s outstanding, award-worthy performance and all of the work the incredible actors and crew put in to bring that story and time period to life.”
Aubrey continued to Variety: “Our audience fell in love with these multi-dimensional, timeless characters and the journey of their struggles living in complicated times.
“With this new story in TNT’s Suspense Collection, we will further immerse viewers into their world as they are confronted with a new enemy.”
When will The Alienist season 2 be released on Netflix?
The Alienist season one was broadcast on a weekly basis in America back in January before it was released internationally on Netflix in April.
Depending on when production starts, The Alienist could be returning in January 2019.
Netflix is probably going to be releasing the new episodes once transmission has been completed in America with audiences outside the region being able to binge the entire cycle in one go.
There are likely to be again 10 episodes in the forthcoming run.
TNT has stated that the follow up to The Alienist will be a sequel rather than a second season.
Again, the new episodes will be part of a limited series, suggesting that it will be a self-contained story.

What will The Alienist season 2 be about?
TNT confirmed that the new story would take its cue from Carr’s novel The Angel of Darkness.
A blurb for the book on Amazon reads: “A year after the events narrated in The Alienist, the cast of characters from that novel are again brought together to investigate a crime committed in the heady days of New York in the 1890s, but this time narrated by the orphan Stevie Taggert.
“A young child, the daughter of Spanish diplomats, disappears. It seems she has been abducted but no ransom note is received and the detective Isaacson quickly discover that a nurse, Elspeth Hunter, is probably the kidnapper.
“They also discover that Hunter has been a little too closely connected with the death of three other infants. But what are her motives? She married a fortune, and although she is connected to some fairly rough villains this crime does not fit their modus operandi.
“Is it something as ‘simple’ as psychological disturbance due to her own inability to bear children, or something more sinister unguessed at?”
There are a total of three published books from the Kreizler series with The Alienist at Armageddon slated for a 2019 release.
According to Entertainment Weekly, writer Carr is also working on a prequel to The Alienist titled The Strange Case of Miss Sarah X.
Carr’s publisher Mulholland Books stated in a release from 2016 that The Strange Case of Miss Sarah X would be about: “A youthful Kreizler, after finishing his psychology training at Harvard, falls under the spell of William James, has his first run-in with Roosevelt, and delves into the secret life of Sara Howard, heroine of the first books.”
