Sainsbury’s, ASDA, Tesco and Morrisons urgent listeria warning as these foods pose a risk

Sainsbury’s, ASDA, Tesco and Morrisons are removing these items from shelves after a listeria warning.

If Britons have these products at home, supermarkets are urging them to return them to shops.

Some of the foods that might pose a health risk include fruit juice and sugar.

Smoked salmon

Ewing Seafoods is recalling Organic Smoked Salmon because it contains Listeria bacteria.

Ewing Seafoods is recalling batches of Organic Smoked Salmon and Original Recipe Smoked Salmon.

The other products in this article have been recalled for reasons other than Listeria.

Symptoms of listeria monocytogenes infection

What are the signs of this illness to look out for? 

The NHS lists symptoms of listeriosis as “a high temperature of 38C or above, aches and pains, chills, feeling sick or vomiting and diarrhoea.”

They are described as “flu-like” and are usually only mild and can be treated at home.

Those who are pregnant are worry they might have listeriosis should contact their midwife as a matter of urgency as it can cause serious problems.

What is Listeria?

Listeria is a bacteria. It’s full name is listeria monocytogenes and it causes an illness named listeriosis.

Listeriosis symptoms are mainly those of food poisoning or flu, including vomiting and diarrhoea, as well as a stiff neck.

The disease can go away within a few days, but poses particular threat to those with a compromised immune system.

A total of nine people in Europe have now died from the disease, two of whom were from the UK.
