WATCH: Shocking moment baggage handler roughly chucks suitcases on airport carousel
A Manchester Airport baggage handler has alarmed viewers of a viral video after a passenger spotted him throwing suitcases onto the airport carousel with seemingly no care for the contents inside.
The shocking incident came after passengers were forced to wait up to four hours for their suitcases early yesterday morning.
The passenger who spotted the episode took to Twitter to share his outrage after arriving from Rome on a delayed flight which landed at 2am on Saturday.
He tweeted: “5am this morning after waiting over 3 hours for our bags to make it from the plane to the carousel.. at least they took good care of our luggage.
“Thanks @manairport #shambles #manchesterairport #goodhustle.”
The clip shows the baggage handler offloading bags from the luggage trolley to the carousel behind the airport.
He appears to show very little consideration for any valuables inside as he chucks them on, with some bags landing very heavily on the carousel as he hurls them to one side.
However, baggage handlers Swissport told Express.co.uk that the footage was “in line with manual baggage handling procedure.”
The flier who filmed the clip is not the only passenger to be fed up with luggage collection at Manchester Airport.
Numerous travellers have complained of “horrendous” and “chaotic” delays of three hours this Bank Holiday weekend.
Ryanair has said a fire alarm evacuation “stretched” the overnight Swissport handling staff, which led to the delay.
A Swissport spokeswoman told the Express.co.uk they understood delays were “frustrating to passengers.”
“The flight schedule was disrupted on Friday evening at Manchester Airport causing a knock-on impact to baggage reclaim for passengers,” she said.
“We always work closely with our airline and airport partners to mitigate the impact of these schedule disruptions to passengers but we understand these delays were frustrating to passengers during this busy bank holiday period.”
Passengers have complained they received very little information from the few staff available.
Some were even forced to sleep on the floor as they waited for their hold luggage.
Customers have vented their anger on social media. One man tweeted on Saturday: “Service @ Manchester Airport horrendous tonight, waited 4 hours to collect daughter as no baggage coming through, no staff to ask, no information available parking fees at ridiculous levels now.”
“Some people have been waiting 3 HOURS for their luggage. More flights are arriving. What is going on? When can we go home?” another woman wrote.
A third man posted: “This is a joke! Some people have been waiting here for over 3 hours for there cases! There’s young children here that need feeding! Absolute joke!”
Small bottles of water were distributed but they were only estimated to have been a few hundred for a crowd said to be between 500 and 1,000, reported The Sun.
A Manchester Airport spokesman told Express.co.uk: “We are aware that some passengers experienced long waiting times to receive their baggage during the night.
“We have been in contact with Swissport, the handling agent responsible, and we will be carrying out a full investigation. We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience caused to passengers.”
Yesterday, a “horrific” crash at Manchester Airport resulted in a man being rushed to hospital after he had to be “cut free” from his wrecked vehicle.
