Champions League draw: Why are Liverpool in Pot 3? Who could they face in group stage?

Liverpool stunned many by going on to reach the Champions League final last season before losing 3-1 to Real Madrid.

It was their first appearance in the Champions League since the 2014/15 season and the only time they have progressed past the group stage since 2009.

They just about managed to secure a second consecutive fourth-placed finish in the Premier League last year to ensure they had another crack at the major European title.

And there was some hope they would have been included in Pot 2 for today’s draw.

Why are Liverpool in Pot 3?

Liverpool’s hopes of being in Pot 2 all depended on Benfica’s second leg play-off match with PAOK Salonika last night.

Jurgen Klopp’s side could have been elevated to the second pot had the Greek side secured victory, but Benfica came out on top, meaning Liverpool will now be drawn in Pot 3.

It also means Liverpool face arguably the toughest draw out of all the English sides.

Manchester City will enter the draw in Pot 1 while both Manchester United and Tottenham are in Pot 2.

Who could Liverpool face in group stage?

Liverpool will not be drawn against teams from the Premier League in the group stage, but there is still a strong possibility for a ‘group of death’.

They WILL be drawn to face one of Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain or Lokomotiv Moscow from Pot 1.

And Pot 2 will also throw up some tough ties with the possibility of facing the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Napoli or Roma among others.

The potential opposition in Pot 4 is a lot more inviting for Liverpool but they could face a tricky tie against Inter Milan.

Champions League draw: Liverpool possible group stage opponents
