Kirsty Young: Desert Island Discs host, 49, steps down after fibromyalgia diagnosis

Kirsty Young spoke out this morning, saying she has been “suffering” from fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS).

The Desert Island Discs favourite will be replaced by Lauren Laverne on the BBC Radio 4 programme for a “number of months”.

The 49-year-old said in a statement: “Casting away some of the world’s most fascinating people is a wonderful job – however, I’m having to take some time away from Desert Island Discs as I’m suffering from a form of fibromyalgia.

“I wish Lauren all the very best, I know she will be great. I very much look forward to getting back to good health and back to work.”

The NHS website describes fibromyalgia, also called fibromyalgia syndrome, as a long-term condition that causes pain all over the body.

Lauren, 40, also commented: “It’s a huge honour to be asked to cover my favourite programme on behalf of one of my heroes.

“As a listener first and foremost, I know what a special place Desert Island Discs holds in the hearts of the British public.”

The DJ and model continued: ”So much of that is down to the warmth, wit and peerless skill of Kirsty Young.

“I wish Kirsty better and will do my very best to look after Desert Island Discs until her return.”

Desert Island Discs will return to the airwaves on September 16, with Kirsty hosting the first two episodes.

She will interview opera singer Danielle de Niese and neurosurgeon Henry Marsh in the instalments.

Lauren will then take over, as well as hosting her weekday mid-morning show on BBC Radio 6 Music.

The mother-of-two, who has appeared on the likes of 10 O’Clock Live and The Culture Show – is also hosting the station’s new Breakfast Show from January onwards.

She took to Twitter to share the news with her 453,000 followers, retweeting Luke Jones’ image of the full statement.

Lauren wrote alongside: “This autumn I’m going to be stepping into the biggest shoes in broadcasting for a while – to cover #DesertIslandDiscs. Wishing the phenomenal Kirsty Young better very soon.”

Author and pal Sali Hughes also shared the news, stating: “When one of your bezzies gets one of your all time favourite shows.

“Obviously sad for (the phenomenally brilliant) Kirsty, but beyond proud of @laurenlaverne – not just the obvious and perfect seat warmer, but the only conceivable one. #DesertIslandDiscs @BBCRadio4.”(sic)

Kirsty, the former anchor of Five News, recently won praise for her coverage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding.

She took over from Sue Lawley as the host of Desert Island Discs 12 years ago and has enjoyed success in the role.

She is married to businessman Nick Jones – the founder of Soho House – and they have two daughters together: Freya, 18, and Iona, 12.
