‘Even Corbyn supporters despise you’ – Andrew Neil delivers shock rebuke to Owen Jones

Mr Neil took to Twitter to say, using an abbreviation for the Labour leader: “I admire how you do JC’s work tirelessly and, so far, without reward.

“Everybody close to Mr Corbyn still despises you. It’s so unfair.

“Maybe adding to your McCarthyite litany by calling Mr Field a bigot will make them see sense.

“I do hope so.”

He later sarcastically told Mr Jones: “You deserve better for selling your soul.”

Mr Neil is an experienced journalist who formerly edited the Sunday Times and currently presents a number of BBC shows, including ‘This Week’ and ‘Politics Live’, which launches next month.

Following Mr Field’s resignation from the Parliamentary Labour Party, citing anti-Semitism and a “culture of intolerance, nastiness and intimidation” in local branches, Mr Jones took to Twitter to attack him.

He wrote: “Frank Field voted to save Theresa May’s Government, supported her extreme Tory Brexiteer policies and has been compared to Enoch Powell because of his xenophobia.

“His local party wanted him out, and he jumped before he was pushed.”

Mr Jones was referring to a no confidence motion passed against Mr Field by his constituency party, after the rare Labour Brexit supporter voted with the Government on a key motion.

A number of other prominent figures criticised Mr Jones over his response.

James Cleverly MP, Deputy Conservative Chairman, tweeted: “Owen Jones showing how to do proper Stalinesque denunciation.

“All must show loyalty to the great leader. Dissent must be destroyed.”

Meanwhile Christian May, editor of City AM, wrote: “Busy couple of days for Owen Jones.

“Yesterday his job was to discredit former Chief Rabbi Sacks, today he’s going to work on Frank Field.”

Jonathan Sacks, formerly the UK’s chief rabbi, controversially claimed earlier this week that comments Jeremy Corbyn made about “Zionists” in 2013 were the most offensive delivered by a senior UK politician since Enoch Powell’s notorious 1968 “Rivers of Blood” speech.

He added Mr Corbyn has: “Given support to racists, terrorists and dealers of hate who want to kill Jews and remove Israel from the map.”
