The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced the pregnancy news shortly after they arrived in Australia for their first official tour since marrying.
Kate Middleton’s sister-in-law is still going ahead with their busy trip to Sydney, Fiji, Tonga, and New Zealand, and looked content as she arrived in Sydney.
OK! online spoke to Lesley Gilchrist, founder of My Expert Midwife and expert speaker at The Baby Show about the ways Meghan can put her health first during this hectic two weeks while pregnant…
Nausea and sickness
Lesley said: “Early pregnancy can be a time of severe nausea, for some women. Taking ginger infused products; such as tea, crystalised ginger, fresh raw ginger, ginger biscuits can help.”
She continued: “Some women also find the aroma of peppermint helps with nausea. When travelling, motion sickness bracelets, which work on acupressure points, may also help with nausea and sickness, especially if you suffer from travel sickness too. If suffering, Meghan should snack little and often, preferably on bland foods such as crackers, nuts and seeds.”
Drinking and hydration
“Meghan should make sure she is always hydrated,” Lesley recommends.
“Being dehydrated may make sickness worse so she should carry plenty of water and take regular sips; she wants to aim for drinking around 3 litres of fluid per day.”
Rest will also be important to Meghan during this trip, as Lesley recommends the Duchess takes rests in-between their engagements.
“If you’re visiting relatives, or in the case of the Duchess of Sussex, royal engagements, you may need to plan additional rests in between, especially if you’re in a different time zone, such as Australia as jet lag will worsen the symptoms of nausea and tiredness,” she explains.
When flying while pregnant, the expert said: “Compression stockings can help to support your legs and work to help to prevent blood clots, which are a risk of long haul flights; take regular walks up and down the aisle, try circling your ankles regularly and drink plenty of water on the flight.”
