That’s the verdict of Premier League legend Alan Shearer – who suspects Mourinho won’t get any January transfers because he was denied his targets in the summer.
United’s continuing demise was further underlined as they lost 3-1 to arch rivals Liverpool yesterday to leave them 19 points off the league summit and 11 adrift of the top four.
The Red Devils’ back-line has been a major weakness for Mourinho, with United already conceding more goals in 17 top-flight games this season than they let in across an entire 38-game season last term.
That comes after the Portuguese boss was denied his wish of a top-class centre-back in the summer with Toby Alderweireld and Harry Maguire among his targets.
United remain linked with centre halves ahead of the upcoming winter window with Alderweireld, Milan Skriniar, Alessio Romagnoli and Kalidou Koulibaly among those to be tipped to move to Old Trafford.
Yet after Mourinho was left frustrated in his search for a centre-back and also a forward in the summer, Shearer does not expect things to be any different next month.
After Pogba failed to play a single minute against Liverpool, one Match of the Day 2 viewer asked: “You’ve got to think if Mourinho isn’t going to play Pogba, then sooner or later it’s either the player or the manager that goes. Who wins out?”
In response, Shearer said: “We’re about to see who runs the football club. We’ll see in January if they give the manager any money to spend.
“My guess is, they didn’t give him what he wanted in the summer, why’s that going to change in January?
