Mr Schemer was responding to an Oval Office address from the President on the current US government shutdown.
During his address Trump said: “To every member of Congress, pass a bill that ends this crisis.
“This is a choice between right and wrong, justice and injustice.”
The President described the border situation as a “crisis” but did not use the prime time TV address to declare a national emergency as some had expected.
Trump added “at the request of the Democrats it will be a steel barrier and not a concrete wall” along the US-Mexico border.
However, it is unclear which Democrats Trump believes are calling for a steel barrier.
The President added he had invited Congressional leaders to the White House for talks to “get this done”.
House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, and Senate minority leader, Mr Schumer, responded for the Democrats.
Ms Pelosi commented: “The President has chosen fear.”
