Meghan Markle and Prince Harry news: All the hints they’ve dropped about baby names

Meghan Markle, 37, is pregnant with her first baby  with husband Prince Harry, 34, and as the Duchess of Sussex’s due date draws closer royal fans are beginning to place bets on what the couple will call their child. While the bookies think Diana – after Harry and Prince William’s, 37, late mum – could be an option for a baby girl, Albert is a strong contender for a baby boy. The couple have so far said little about their royal tot, but they have dropped some hints about the names they like. Prince Harry has even confessed he’d love to have a little girl, replying to a well-wisher: “So do I!” when they said they were hoping the couple welcomed a daughter.

During a recent royal engagement to Birkenhead, the couple chatted to some schoolchildren who believed she’s expecting a baby girl and asked what they thought the parents-to-be should name their baby.

“What name do you think I should call her?” Meghan asked one of the kids.

Pupil Ivon Chen, 11, responded: “Amy”.

After her suggestion, Meghan gestured to her private secretary Amy Pickerill saying she too is called Amy.

Meghan added: “That’s a really pretty name, I like it. We’ll have to think about it.”

During the same visit, Prince Harry apparently asked one mum how she spelled her daughter’s name, Lily.

Meghan and Harry announced their pregnancy on the day they arrived for their royal tour of Australia, Fiji, Tonga, and New Zealand.

They were then bombarded with name suggestions throughout their trip, saying they would sit down and look at the lists they’d been given.

Royal Producer at ITV News, Lizzie Robinson, tweeted during the tour: “Harry and Meghan were quizzed on baby names during a tram ride in Melbourne. Meghan said, ‘We’ve been given a long list of names from everyone. We’re going to sit down and have a look at them. We haven’t thought of one as it’s still quite early’.”

Harry’s father Prince Charles, 70, has even put forward some suggestions.

At a reception celebrating the centenary of Australia House Charles said: “Incidentally, ladies and gentlemen, my son Harry tells me that during their recent tour of Australia, he and his wife were offered countless thoughtful suggestions for the naming of their forthcoming baby.

“Just between us, I suspect that Kylie and Shane may possibly make the shortlist.”

During the British Fashion Awards in December, Meghan was also apparently overheard revealing a girl’s name she liked – Darcy.

According to Practical Parenting, Meghan was speaking to close friend and Givenchy designer Clare Waight Keller and actress Rosamund Pike when she made the admission.

Rosamund was apparently overheard saying: “That is a lovely name” to the Duchess.

A fellow event-goer said: “The three to them were talking really intently. They are all clearly really good friends and were talking about Meghan’s bump and how much she had ‘popped’ in the last few weeks.

“Then there was a pause and Meghan whispered something and then one said that they thought the name Darcy was just gorgeous and Meghan was nodding and agreeing.”
