The final movie in the original Star Wars trilogy sees things between Luke and his father come to a head – when he continues trying to persuade him to join the Dark Side. The film’s climax sees the pair in front of the sinister Emperor Palpatine, who tries to seduce Luke into jumping teams. Of course he fails.
Luke and Vader soon fight, and before the latter’s inevitable death, there seems to be a small moment of redemption for him.
But is there another moment of fatherly protection earlier on?
Reddit user MajorBatarang posted: “Just finished watching ROTJ for like the millionth time, and I just noticed something that I never have before.
“In the scene where Luke goes to kill the Emperor, Vader saves his son from starting down towards the Dark Side by deflecting Luke’s attack.”
Indeed, as the lightsaber battle kicks off, Vader activates his red weapon just as Luke is about to make a swing for the Emperor with his iconic green one.
It is assumed, naturally, that Vader is protecting the Emperor and fighting on his behalf.
But was there more to it than that? Was Vader actually stopping Luke from going down a path of no return by giving in to his sinister feelings?
The observation has been 80% Upvoted on Reddit, with one person responding: “That’s actually a really good point that I hadn’t thought about much. It’s a moment that can be looked at in 2 ways.
“Luke gives into the Dark for Vader to save Palpatine, his master at the last second – or Luke gives in only for Vader to to save Luke from committing cold blooded murder like he did and sealing his fate.”
What contradicts things slightly is what follows: Vader continues on the offensive against Luke, but was he just saving face in front of his boss? It seems it’s open to interpretation.
Currently, work is being done on the final movie of the Skywalker saga – the as-yet-untitled Episode 9.
It is speculated that the title and a first teaser trailer will arrive ahead of the Super Bowl in a couple of weeks’ time.
Star Wars: Episode 9 is in cinemas on December 19.
