DJ Marshmello performed first ever live concert in Fortnite

Epic Games has made history by hosting their first online live concert event where the DJ, known as Marshmello, performed in their popular game Fortnite on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019.

Fortnite is an online multiplayer battle royale video game where 100 players are placed on a map gathering resources and weapons in order to be the last survivor and earn a “Victory Royale.” This video game can be played on a number of systems such as PC, Playstation 4, Xbox One and even on your cell phone.

This is the first game to have cross play access across all platforms. The game features various modes which include Duos and Squads where players can team up with up to four players and battle other teams on the map.

Christopher Comstock, famously known as Marshmello, is a 26 year old American DJ and producer from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is recognizably known for his white helmet with a black smiley face. Marshmello performed in the game at a location known as “Pleasant Park”.

In preparation of the concert, Epic Games prepared gamers with dedicated challenges to earn a free emote dance, “Keep It Mellow” as well as a Marshmello themed pickaxe, “Marshy Smasher”, to celebrate the event.

A Marshmello skin and glider were available for purchase with Fortnite’s digital currency known as “VBucks,” which can be bought with real money or earned from playing the video game. The limited time concert mode took place over all the other available game modes in order to have a smooth run of the concert.

This is not the first time Epic Games has had live events happen in the game, other events include a rocket launching causing a rift in the sky that allowed players to teleport to different locations on the map. Another event featured a glowing cube being absorbed in the map at a location called “Loot Lake”, causing the lake to become one big bouncing pad.

The concert started with Marshmello playing his popular song, “Alone”. Marshmello engaged with the players by shouting out which emotes to use. During the concert there were holograms and video projections on the stage screens of Marshmello’s iconic helmet. Around the dance floor there were holograms of Marshmello doing various emotes to dance along with the players.

Players gathered around the stage using different emotes to dance. However, because it is an online game, trolls, which is a name for people online who are known to cause trouble, threw tomatoes at the stage. Fortunately it did not interfere with the concert.

One of the big highlights of the concert was during the beat drop of the song “Fly”, players were levitated in the air being able to soar around the stage. The concert went on for about ten minutes, without any noticeable technical difficulties. Marshmello ended the concert with his hit track, “Happier” featuring Bastille.
