Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Charles are visiting Greece to celebrate the nation’s bicentenary. As they stepped out in Athens, Camilla wore a rare piece of jewellery once belonging to Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.
She removed the coat when inside to reveal a classic navy skirt suit.

DON’T MISS

The art-deco jewel has been worn by the royal before, as recently as last year.

Camilla has sported it on key occasions including the Royal Family church service in 2017.

It is made from a rock crystal and has a diamond in the middle of the rectangular design.

On first glance, the brooch appears to be fairly minimal but it has a subtle hidden design which adds more detail.

Following the trend of the time, the Queen Mother wore the piece pinned to the outer rim of her hat during one outing in the 1920s.

It is likely it became part of Queen Elizabeth II’s collection following her mothers death in 2002.

The Queen is likely to have gifted the jewel to Camilla, or has leant it to her to wear on various occasions.

By choosing to wear the brooch, Camilla could be showing her respect for the Queen Mother, as the anniversary of her death falls next week on March 30.

The royal line of succession – who outranks who?

The line of succession to the British throne dictates the order in which each member of the Royal Family would ascend to the throne.

It is also seen as a ranking of importance with the head of the line, the Queen, taking the place of ruler.

Older children come before younger children. Traditionally boys came before girls, but this law was changed on 26 March 2015 before the birth of Prince William’s first child.

Incredibly, Catholics are still excluded from the line of succession, as are children born outside of wedlock.

The royals, who usually stick to a strict protocol when appearing in public, often arrive at events in ascending order of importance, with the most important royal arriving last.

Prince Charles, 72, is currently first-in-line to the British throne, followed by Prince William, 38, his oldest son.

Then comes Prince William’s children, George, seven, Charlotte, five, and Louis, two, and they are followed by Prince Harry, 36. Prince Harry is succeeded by his son Archie Harrison, born in May 2019.
