Lionel Messi has reportedly handed over a list of demands to Joan Laporta that he would like to see met if he is to stay at Barcelona[1].

Reappointed president Laporta is setting about trying to convince the club icon to stay at the Nou Camp beyond the end of his current contract, which expires at the end of the season.

Messi had seemed set to leave Barca and potentially join Manchester City[2] last summer, only for a bitter row over a supposed clause in his contract to emerge.

Many have expected this to be Messi’s last season at the Nou Camp before he embarks on a new challenge, but his good recent form as well as that of the team and the election of Laporta is said to have increased the chances of him staying.

Eurosport[3] report that he has now laid out a list of his demands to Laporta that, if met, could lead to him penning a new deal.

Among the priorities on the list, Messi is said to have asked for the club to make a big-name signing this summer as they seek to get back to the very top level of European football. Barca were knocked out of the last-16 of the Champions League and are four points off the pace in La Liga.

That demand has led to suggestions that Barca could look to sign Erling Haaland[4], with the forward’s agent Mino Raiola and his father Alf-Inge holding talks with the club on Thursday[5]. Messi’s friend Sergio Aguero is also an option to be considered.

However, one of Messi’s other conditions is said to be that the club continue to trust in their exciting crop of young players, with Ansu Fati, Pedri and Iliax Moriba all given first-team chances.

If the club listen to him then that could spell bad news for Liverpool’s Gini Wijnaldum, whose hope of a move to Barca is said to be blocked by the emergence of the exciting midfielder Moriba[6].

Messi and Laporta maintain a strong relationship, and the president is likely to do all his can to ensure that the club legend stays in Catalonia.
