Piers Morgan told Emily Maitlis GMB put him on brink of divorce before Meghan row

Piers Morgan told Emily Maitlis GMB put him on brink of divorce before Meghan row
Piers, 56, stormed off GMB’s set after he was called out by weather reporter Alex Beresford for “continuing to trash” Meghan last month. He said he didn’t believe the Duchess’ claims made in an interview with Oprah Winfrey, as she joined Prince Harry to discuss their exit from the Royal Family. The saga led to Piers leaving the ITV breakfast show for good ‒ but he was struggling with his early-morning presenting slot long before Megxit.
Emily Maitlis, writing in her memoir ‘Airhead: The Imperfect Art of Making News’, recalls how she enjoys a close personal relationship with Piers.

After “becoming mates over 15 years ago”, she notes how Piers came to visit and spoke candidly about the demands associated with being a breakfast TV host.

And Piers was extremely frank and open about the strains it put on his marriage.

She writes: “I recalled how shattered he looked then, as he admitted the breakfast programme he presents was killing him and swearing his wife would divorce him if he stayed on it any longer.

“But he remained in the job after they allowed him to push his start-time back an hour or more.

“He turns up at the studio at 5.30am nowadays, allowing him a mere half-hour before the show starts.

“He says: ‘I’m lucky. Five minutes of slap and on I go.

“‘The female stars of the show all have to go and get ready ‒ it takes them longer because they get more attention and pressure on how they look.’

“I’m struck by how carefully he’s tip-toed round that sentence.”

Piers has been happily married to wife Celia Walden since 2010.

He made the comments before the release of his friend’s book in 2019, long before Meghan and Harry decided to sit down with Oprah.

Since leaving GMB, he has refused to relent in his verbal lashings of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, though.

During his first interview after leaving the ITV programme, he told Fox News’ Tucker Carlson that he felt pressured to believe the Duchess.

He added: “I was told that you have got to believe Meghan Markle and if you do not believe what she is saying, you are a racist.”

Then, Piers sensationally claimed to have received “some messages” from “several members of the Royal Family” praising him for his work.

He told Extra that he was “not going to go into who it was” but claimed the note was of “gratitude” because “somebody was standing up”.

Piers claimed there were “many attempts” to “cancel me” after regularly making comments about Meghan.

He added: “Somehow I remain resolutely uncancelled.”

The journalist revealed he walked away from GMB after bosses “required” him to “apologise for disbelieving” the Duchess’ remarks about her mental health.

He said he still “didn’t believe” Meghan and concluded: “I believe, which is ironic, that you should not believe somebody if you don’t want to.”

Piers claimed to have been attacked by “so-called liberal” trolls since his commentary on Meghan’s admissions.

He believed it was “clear” that the Duchess “was trying to put huge pressure on my bosses to take action against me”.

Piers’ departure from ITV came six years after his first appearance on the breakfast news show.

An ITV spokesperson said: “Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain.

“ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.”
