Phil Spencer explains how working from home could change homeowners’ renovation plans
Home improvement and garden retailer Wickes has decided to launch the Wickes 2021 Home Office Awards to celebrate Britons’ creativity. The awards will reward those who have created incredible working from home spaces, even in the most challenging environments. Offices built under the stairs, shed work spaces and even desks in bedrooms are just some of the ways home workers have had to get creative with their office spaces.
The competition will have two rounds which will see five shortlisted and one overall winner.

Those shortlisted will win a £150 voucher prize while the winner will receive £1,000 Wickes vouchers to put towards their next home improvement project.

One of the awards on offer has been named the “Cleaning Up in the Kitchen Award” which will be rewarded to those who have created a working from home space within the kitchen.

Many homeowners now have open-plan living spaces which can sometimes include a lounge, dining room and kitchen area.

The TV property expert shared an example from the Channel 4 show Love it or List it which he presents with Kirstie Allsopp.

Phil said he visited a couple, before the pandemic, who wanted to take a wall down to open up their space.

He continued: “Kirstie said ‘don’t take the whole wall down, take part of the wall down and then you could have double doors that open up’.

“They were against that idea and they did proceed and take the whole wall down and make it open plan.”

He added: “In a house I lived in in London we pulled out the corridors and the hallways to make the living room bigger and more open.

“Would you do that now if you were needing to work from home? Probably not.

“A hallway and a dedicated space could be super useful.”

Simply visit Wickes Facebook, Instagram or Twitter page and follow the guidance on each channel to share a picture of you in your working from home space, using the hashtag #WickesHomeOfficeAwards.
