ITV News Calendar presenter Christine Talbot announced this evening that she is leaving the programme after 20 years.

Christine, 51, has been the main co-anchor on Calendar since 2001, when she first appeared with Geoff Druett and in more recent years alongside Duncan Wood. She will leave at the end of June.

Living near Wetherby with her husband Chris and daughter Beth, Christine has received a number of industry awards during her career, including the 02 Presenter of the Year for her region in 2015, as well as O2 Journalist of the Year in 2016 and The Yorkshire Choice Media Personality of the Year, also in 2016.

In January 2012, it was announced on air on Calendar that Christine had been diagnosed with breast cancer and would be taking a break from the programme for her treatment and recovery.

In the December of that year, after what was reportedly a “gruelling 12 months” for the presenter, she returned to the studio in January 2013.

Helping to promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month and supporting NHS Leeds West Clinical Commissioning Group in its message about recognising breast cancer symptoms, Christine said: “I had put off having a mammogram as I was just too busy.

“I now realise that if I’d perhaps attended a mammogram when I was supposed to, I might have been diagnosed earlier and my treatment might have been a little less invasive, as I had to have an aggressive form of chemotherapy.

“But I was very lucky and if I had left it much longer I might have not been so lucky.”

Presenter Duncan Wood previously said that among the funnier moments on Calendar was Christine walking on set in a traffic warden’s uniform, which was “particularly memorable”.

Calendar weatherman Jon Mitchell said: “The highlight of my career was being in bed in the studio with Christine Talbot as part of ‘Take a Nap at Work Day’! It was hot under those covers – it must have been the studio lights.”

In March, Christine tweeted about the departures of friends and fellow ITV News presenters Gaynor Barnes and John Shires, who announced they were retiring.

She said: “It’s going to be an emotional day as we say goodbye to these two @itvcalendar legends, my dear friends @GaynorLBarnes and @johnshiresitv after more than 30 years. Brilliant presenters and also lovely people.”
