The Chase contestant's big Golden Mile blunder astounds fans

Viewers of the hit ITV quiz show The Chase were up in arms today when a contestant made a big blunder.

Alan, a Special Educational Needs teacher in Salford, was the first contestant out of Gary, Sue, Kiera and Alan to go forward for the cash builder and then face the chaser.

He chatted to host Bradley Walsh before the cash builder – and revealed that in his spare time the 34-year-old liked to play golf and cook spicy foods like curries and Thai cusine.

If he won some cash Alan said he wanted to buy his other half Gina a car so she could pick him up from the pub.

Alan scored £6,000 in his cash builder and decided to play for that amount in his head to head with The Chaser – revealed as The Governess, Anne Hegerty, tonight, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Alan was doing well with his questions, but on his final question he made a big error which viewers were quick to pick up on.

The question asked which tourist destination was the furthest North and Alan correctly chose ‘The Golden Mile’.

He may have got the question right, but his knowledge of where it is was a bit off, as he remarked: “It’s in Edinburgh isn’t it?”

Bradley looked a bit shocked before he took a second to say “yeah, absolutely” – but not able to tell him how wrong he was.

Alan asked: “Is it Edinburgh?” and Bradley added “oh yeah, 100 per cent” as the audience laughed.

Bradley said once more: “I think it is Edinburgh” as the audience laughed – and revealed Alan had got it right.

After Anne said: “It’s the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, The Golden Mile is in Blackpool.”

Alan commented: “That’s where my other half is from, Blackpool” – to which Anne said: “well, you should have known that,” before he returned to his team with £6,000 in the bag.

And viewers were quick to slam Alan’s answer on Twitter.

Kevin Field said: “The Golden Mile, with the “Edinburgh Tower'”

Gary B said: “The Golden Mile is Blackpool you plank.”

Lois Prior said: “Omg Edinburgh??! #TheChase ”

And Ryan Glendenning said: “Everyone in Blackpool feeling insulted that Alan doesn’t know the golden mile.”

The Chase is on ITV every weekday from 5pm, and you can catch up on ITV Hub
