England to face Germany in last 16 of Euro 2020 as Three Lions' path to glory confirmed

England will face old foes Germany in their first knockout stage match at Euro 2020 after Joachim Loew’s side progressed as Group F runners-up courtesy of a thrilling 2-2 draw with Hungary on Wednesday evening. The match will be played in front of 45,000 supporters at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday afternoon with a kick-off time of 5.00pm.

Germany confirmed their participation in the fixture thanks to the result at the Allianz Arena, with Leon Goretzka’s late equaliser saving the four-time world champions from a humiliating defeat on home soil.

Hungary took the lead on two occasions but were unable to hold on and progress to the knockout stages of the tournament despite a commendable performance.

France finished as Group F winners on five points after winning just one and drawing two of their three matches, while Portugal also qualified in third place after playing out a 2-2 stalemate of their own with the 2018 World Cup winners.

Meanwhile, England’s narrow victory over the Czech Republic on Tuesday sealed their place at the top of Group D and another high-profile meeting with Germany at a major tournament.

Raheem Sterling’s early goal proved to be the difference between the two sides, with Bukayo Saka and Jack Grealish also starring for the Three Lions.

If they manage to overcome the challenged posed by Germany in the next round, they will face either Sweden or Ukraine in the quarter-finals.

The Netherlands, Wales, Denmark or the Czech Republic could await England in the last four in the event of the Three Lions progressing, while France, Belgium or Italy are the most likely finalists on the other side of the draw.

Gareth Southgate spoke of his optimism after Tuesday’s win over the Czechs, suggesting that his side are more than capable of stepping it up a notch in the business end of the tournament.

“There is more to come from us, definitely,” the 50-year-old told ITV Sport. “We’re not fluent but we have moments where we are a good side.

“We haven’t scored from a set play yet. I know people laugh about us only scoring from set plays but they are crucial in big matches and we have to get those nailed.

“We wanted to win the group, we wanted to stay at Wembley and we will wait and see who we play tomorrow.

“They are different sorts of tests but there are a lot of good things we are doing.

“We have managed to get most of the squad into games, 90 minutes for Harry Maguire which was important, Hendo [Jordan Henderson] got 45 minutes which was a real step forward. There were a lot of positives for us.”

The Three Lions have faced Germany at a number of major tournaments over the years to varying degrees of success.

England’s legendary triumph in the 1966 World Cup final will live long in the memory of supporters of a certain age, while younger generations may remember the heartbreak of Euro 96, with Southgate famously missing a crucial penalty during a semi-final shoot-out at Wembley to send Sir Bobby Robson’s side packing.

Germany strolled to another victory in the first knockout round of the 2010 World Cup, a match overshadowed by Frank Lampard’s iconic goal that never was.
