Martin Lewis warns 'minefield' travel rules may spark holiday losses - 'be very cautious'

Travel to green list destinations is set to expand from Wednesday, June 30, with more nations being added to the UK’s quarantine-free list. However, Britons who are looking to book a holiday in the coming months have received a stark warning from money saving expert Martin Lewis.

The financial expert explained that even if a country is currently on the green list, sudden changes to Covid restrictions both at home and abroad could have a serious impact on consumer’s wallets.

Speaking on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, Martin also revealed that many travel insurance firms will only pay out in certain situations.

Often, changes to quarantine rules are not covered.

“You need to look at a country. If the Foreign Office is advising against all non-essential travel, or advising against all travel, then that would likely trigger a cancellation and a payout if you couldn’t go,” he explained.

“It’s not definite, that’s the Competition and Market Authority’s view.

“But on most holiday firm policies, if there is a quarantine requirement that doesn’t count.

“So even if if you had to go to Portugal, quarantine for 14 days, quarantine for 10 days when you get back because its an amber country, that in itself is not a reason for cancellation or triggering a refund which is why it is a true minefield at the moment with that trio of regulations.”

He continued: “Anyone booking holidays now – travel insurance won’t protect you from a Covid-based cancellation if you get covid. If you get Covid you will generally be covered.

“But if you can’t go because of Covid rule changes you won’t be covered.

“I’m afraid it’s terrible for the travel industry but you need to be very very cautious about booking.”

It comes as a number of countries in Europe begin to ramp up entry restrictions for Britons, with new mandatory quarantine for those who are unvaccinated.

German chancellor Angela Merkel has called for a united approach to quarantining UK arrivals across the EU.

Speaking on Thursday, she said: “In our country, if you come from Great Britain, you have to go into quarantine – and that’s not the case in every European country, and that is what I would like to see.”

So far, Spain and Malta have already began to ramp up entry rules for Britons ahead of their return.

Spain’s Balearic Islands and Malta were both added to the green list at the most recent traffic light review.

Both nations now require arrivals to show either evidence of a negative COVID-19 PCR test, or proof of being fully vaccinated within 14 days prior to arrival.

Though there are concerns over how quarantine rules may impact cancellation or travel insurance policies, some travel providers have overhauled traditional terms and conditions in order to provide more protection.

Travel insurance provider battleface, for example, now vows its customers will be covered even if Foreign Office travel advice changes.

Katie Crowe, director of communications for battleface, explained: “We welcome the news that more destinations have been added to the green list.

“As international travel opens up it is important for travellers to ensure they have the right travel insurance for their destination.

“As countries may move between lists, it is important to find a policy not invalidated by changes in FCDO advice. battleface offers travel insurance for all destinations regardless of their traffic light colour and those under FCDO essential and non-essential travel advisories.”
