Hamilton’s current team-mate, Bottas, is lagging far behind the 36-year-old in the driver’s standings after a series of poor performances which have negated his ability to perform as an effective wingman.
Conversely, Dutch rival Max Verstappen has benefitted from the much-improved Sergio Perez at Red Bull as the pair have claimed all of the last five Grand Prix victories between them.
Those favourable results leave Verstappen 32 points clear at the top, giving Hamilton a serious challenge if he is to work his way back towards a record-breaking eighth world title.
