Kang the Conqueror: Marvel's time-travelling villain explained – what he means for the MCU

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD FOR LOKI. Following Thanos, the MCU needs another big bad and it seems it’s going to be Kang the Conqueror. Jonathan Majors was announced to play the time-travelling villain as the main antagonist in 2023’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

However, in a shock twist, Kang the Conqueror debuted in the season finale of Loki today.

A variant of himself called He Who Remains was found to be living in The Citadel at the End of Time.

He had created the Time Variance Authority to end the multiversal war between the Kang variants.

But now that Sylvie has killed He Who Remains, a multiverse of madness has unleashed with dangerous variants of Kang ready to cross alternate realities to rule space and time.

The variant Kang known as He Who Remains may be dead, but his other selves are yet to come.

And from the final moments of Loki, it was clear at least one of them has already asserted himself over the TVA.

The god of mischief found that Mobius didn’t know who he was and the statues of the Time Keepers had been replaced by a single sculpture of Kang himself.

The series then ended with a promise of season 2, but the multiverse chaos looks likely to continue this Christmas in Spider-Man No Way Home.

Spider-Man No Way Home is heavily rumoured to include variant Peter Parkers played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, plus a whole host of former Sony villains.

Then next year there’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is penned by Loki writer Michael Waldron, so maybe Kang will next show up here.

While 2023’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has been confirmed to see the time-travelling despot as the main villain and we doubt that’ll be the last of him.

After all, there’s an upcoming Fantastic Four movie and an eventual Avengers 5 so buckle up.
