It’s a fast car. BMW says it’s faster than they claim — official data show a time of 3.8 seconds from 0-60 mph. It can’t possibly be Shelby GT500 fast, though. While the M4 Comp is able to punch higher than its weight, the GT500 can do so much more. Can the M4 Comp really keep up with the Big Snake, then?
Edmunds shows the cars being side by side for a drag race of quarter mile to determine which car is faster. These cars would not normally be matched up because Shelby is an extremely special, high-powered car that was built almost exclusively for drag racing. The BMW M4 Competition, on the other hand, is a car the middle class can live comfortably with. The M4 Comp was tested with a sticker cost of $102,000 (! It better win the drag race.
The M4 Comp is unbeatable on paper. The M4 Comp’s twin-turbo, 3.0-liter inline-six produces 503 horsepower and 479 pounds-feet of torque. This is quite shocking considering that this much power can be outgunned almost in an drag race. The Shelby GT500’s supercharged V8 of 5.2 Liters produces an incredible 760 horsepower, and 625 lb.ft. The cars were both equipped with automatic gearboxes, but they had rear-wheel drives in our test. An all-wheel-drive M4 will be available soon. The M4 is able to defend itself, however, by using Bavarian horses, it seems stronger than other cars, and often outperforms the spec sheet. Is it possible to do this one more?
Actually, sort of, yeah. From a standstill, the M4’s better launch control and more modest power allowed it to fire off the line and get a lead it never lost. In three races, the Shelby had no chance off the line, despite having almost 260 more horsepower. The GT500’s problem was the fact that it couldn’t stop spinning its tires into third gear. Which means, in the real world, all that power means nothing from a stop light.
Although things did change a little in rolling drag races, the results were still impressive. The numbers are still amazing and you should check this video to see how close they were in terms of performance despite the huge power difference.
