Next month, Patrick Cantlay makes his Ryder Cup debut

Patrick Cantlay won the BMW Championship in a stunning win, earning him sixth place automatically qualifying for the US Ryder Cup.

Cantlay was ranked 11th at Caves Valley when he arrived. However, his par-seven birdie against Bryson deChambeau on the sixth playoff hole propelled him up five spots and knocked Tony Finau from the side.

After a conversation with Cantlay earlier in the week, Cantlay revealed that Fred Couples will be joining Steve Stricker’s backroom staff.

Tony Finau was out of the automatic qualifier position and Cantlay took it.

Cantlay said, “I am excited.” Fred Couples sent me a text this week saying that he was going to be an assistant captain, so he will be there. We’re looking forward to the opportunity. I spoke with Xander and Justin Thomas, as well as Jordan.

It’s great to be able to earn points and it’s something I look forward to. It’s something I have heard of and seen growing up. It will definitely be all I had hoped for and much more. “I will keep my fingers crossed, and we may win,”

Finau appears to have a good chance of keeping his spot in the team, having won his first victory in more than five years at The Northern Trust. Steve Stricker is scheduled to announce six captain’s choices on September 8.

Collin Morikawa was the Ryder Cup’s top finisher

Open champion Collin Morikawa was crowned the winner ahead of Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka. Justin Thomas and Justin Thomas were second and third respectively. Ryder Cup veterans Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed, and Brooks Koepka are all dependent on their wildcard status for the contest at Whistling Strits.

Cantlay’s amazing win in Baltimore also lifted him up to the top in the FedExCup standings, ahead of next week’s season-finale in Atlanta.

The staggered scoring system is in effect and Cantlay will be at East Lake Thursday with a score of 10 under, while Tony Finau starts on 8 under.

Sergio Garcia is qualified to compete in the Tour Championship next week

Reed was released from the hospital following treatment for bilateral pneumonia. He claimed the final and 30th place in the Tour Championship field despite having missed the previous three tournaments because of his illness.

After KH Lee, the 2018 Masters Champion, made a terrible mistake on the last hole of the BMW Championship and saw him fall to 31st place in the FedExCup Standings, the Masters champ looked certain to be out.

Erik van Rooyen and Sergio Garcia were big movers at the penultimate tournament on the PGA Tour’s season. Erik van Rooyen jumped 16 places to finish 28th, after finishing tied for sixth at Caves Valley.

Rory McIlroy, a two-time FedExCup winner, improved to 16th with his fourth-placed Baltimore finish. He will be happy to make up the eight shots that he requires to surpass Cantlay to claim another $15 million bonus.
