Microsoft has begun to suggest that Windows 11 will be released later in 2021. This means PC users might have to buy a new computer to keep Windows updated.

The Verge reports that Microsoft had previously stated to The Verge that although Windows 11 requires certain hardware, it wouldn’t prevent users installing it on any computer that can handle it. Microsoft changed its statement, however, adding a significant caveat. Microsoft does not promise to release Windows Updates on those computers.

Microsoft has officially launched Windows 11 this June. The computer company announced the minimum requirements to install the most recent operating system. These requirements stipulated that Windows 11 will only work with computers equipped with the Intel 8th Generation processor released in 2017 or later.

These minimums will not affect automatic updates. Older computers will still be able download Windows 11 and install it manually. It’s not a major inconvenience, and it’s likely that you won’t need to purchase a new computer.

It’s unclear at the moment if manual updates will be included in this option, or whether those releases will not be made available for users with Microsoft-designated obsolete hardware. Windows Updates not available? Users would miss important security and driver updates, even though Windows 11 may have been delayed. This is not good.

Since the launch of Microsoft’s latest operating system Windows 10, it’s been over six years. A new operating system is welcome news, particularly if it has been well-received. It is absurd to require users of computers less than two years old to purchase a new computer.

Microsoft’s decision to release Windows 11 will be controversial. It’ll be fascinating to see what happens. Maybe the company will decide that the tradeoff between the number of people willing to resign and go buy a new computer or stay with Windows 10 is worth it.
