Decision made by Man about Cristiano Ronaldo’s shirt number Utd’s deadline day plans

Manchester United have found a way of handing Cristiano Ronaldo his iconic No 7 shirt, according to reports. The shirt is currently occupied by Edinson Cavani but the club can supposedly seek special dispensation from the Premier League to make a switch.

The Red Devils confirmed on Friday that they had agreed a deal for the sensational return of legendary forward Ronaldo, who decided he wanted to leave Juventus.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said on Friday that the only thing remaining to complete the deal is for the paperwork to be signed, sealing a transfer for Ronaldo to go back to Old Trafford 12 years after he departed for Real Madrid.

Soon, the question was raised as to whether Ronaldo could wear his No7 shirt.

Sir Alex Ferguson assigned the number to the 36-year old and he went on to become one of a growing list legends to have worn the number. Previous Man Utd No 7s include Eric Cantona, David Beckham and George Best.

Others have however pointed out that special dispensation was not possible after Cavani wore No 7 on Sunday against Wolves.

Rumours about Ronaldo’s shirt size will continue to swirl, but a story from the Portuguese suggests that Ronaldo could be given a more sentimental shirt.

Ronaldo previously mentioned how he wished to wear No28 when he first joined the team in 2003.

As a teenager, he wore this number at Sporting Lisbon. However Ferguson gave him the No 7, worn by Beckham, Cantona, and Best.

Ronaldo said he was ‘petrified of’ the shirt his first time he wore it.

Ronaldo stated at a 2016 promotional event that “When I arrived to United, I requested 28”

“I was terrified because I knew David Beckham wore this shirt. It was a challenge, but I accepted it and have been blessed with that shirt ever since. With that shirt, I’ve won every football match.”

Ronaldo was another United hero who wore the number. He won three Premier League titles as well as the 2008 Champions League final. Before leaving Real in an then-world record transfer, he scored 118 goals in 292 games.

Luke Shaw, United’s defender, stated that forward’s returns have given his dressing room an ‘lift.

Sky Sports asked Shaw if Ronaldo’s presence had created a buzz among the players. Shaw replied: “Yeah, of course.”

It’s given me a huge lift not only inside, but outside. This is clearly a positive.

He’s one of the most respected players around the globe for many years. Everyone is excited to see him come in and learn from him as well as play with him.
