Alan Cumming was awarded honorary doctorate by his drama school, The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

The Olivier and Tony Award winner, 56, returned to the Glasgow school to be honoured for his career on the stage and screen and his work for equality and human rights.

The actor from Hollywood accepted the award during a small ceremony and said that he was moved by the honorary doctorate.

“I arrived here to study 36 years ago, and from the beginning I felt at home here. This institution’s spirit has helped me become the artist I am today.

“Three Years of developing and training technique are very special. The older I get, the more I realize how valuable this training was and the confidence that I have gained from it has served me well.

“I like the fact that I went to college in Glasgow. It allowed me to fail, learn, and have fun.

On Instagram, he added: “I received an honorary doctorate in drama today from my alma matter!”

It’s currently called the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, but it used to be the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. I was 36 years old when I received my degree! You can find it here!

Cumming, according to Professor Jeffrey Sharkey of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland was an inspiration. He ‘flows effortlessly between different art forms.

“Alan’s work continually demonstrates that bold thoughts, adaptability, and clear artistic authenticity can be a powerful combination,” he said.

“His remarkable body of work, and his dedication to social activism, are an inspiration for the next generation. We are proud of the prolific contributions he made to society and the arts.

Alan won the prestigious Tony and Olivier Awards for his stage work and was a star in the TV series Sex and the City and Frasier.

He is also known as a supporter of Scottish independence and has been active in LGBT rights advocacy both in the UK, and the US.
