According to reports, Chelsea is making an extraordinary late effort to sign Saul Niguez from Atletico Madrid on loan before the transfer deadline. As the clock ticks towards 11pm, The Blues continue to try and complete their business.
Romelu Lukaku remains the club’s sole major signing, having completed a stunning PS97.5million return at Stamford Bridge earlier in the month.
Marcus Bettinelli, third choice goalkeeper, has arrived as a competition for Edouard Mendy or Kepa Arizzabalaga.
Chelsea tried to sign Jules Kounde, Sevilla’s defender but have been unable to do so. Frenchman Jules Kounde has a release clause worth around PS60m. La Liga wants an offer that is close to this figure.
The West Londoners, however, are still believed to be interested in Atletico’s midfielder Saul.
According to The Athletic, Marina Granovskaia, Blues’ sporting director is ‘actively’ working to secure a deal for the Spaniard’s temporary stay at the club.
Saul was instrumental in Diego Simeone’s win of the Spanish top flight last season. He finished ahead rival Real Madrid and Barcelona.
The 26-year old has also been linked to a possible departure from the academy where he was educated.
Liverpool and Manchester United have been both credited with interest in Saul, but Chelsea seems to have leapt ahead of them.
He is not sure where he will fit in Thomas Tuchel’s 3-4-5-3. Mateo Kovacic, Jorginho, and N’Golo Kante are all competing for his two central midfield slots.
After a five-month period of success, Tuchel pledged not to make any drastic changes to his team. He won the Champions League in May.
Lukaku, his sole major acquisition, has done well since his departure from Inter Milan.
Last week, Tuchel stated that he was happy with the squad, even without any additions.
He insisted, however that newcomers would be welcomed because his squad is one of the most small in the league. The club is yet to sign a deal with Saul.
After his team beat Arsenal 10 days back, the German declared that he was happy with the squad and all the options available to him.
“It’s not too big a squad, we were missing Christian Pulisic today and that meant everybody else was in the squad.
This means that although we may not have the largest squad, we do have an extremely competitive team in every position.
“This, on one hand, is necessary because we play a lot of competitions and we play the World Club Cup in December.
“We also played very long last season and there was the Euros and Copa America.
This level is essential if you want to be competitive. However, we must be a cohesive group. This was perhaps the most important thing for the past half year. It was a wonderful team effort and strong bonds that we shared.
This is an opportunity for us to challenge each other and create a new atmosphere. That everyone is willing to make tough decisions, and that the team keeps pushing.
This is how we will achieve greater success than what we currently have. “
