Anthony Martial, who reportedly turned down the opportunity to join Lyon on loan at deadline day, said he would rather prove himself at Manchester United. After the shocking return of Cristiano Ronaldo, the Frenchman is now fighting for his place at Old Trafford. However, he doesn’t want to leave the club.
Martial received a lot of criticism after his recent start to the season, when the Red Devils were held at a 1-1 draw in Southampton.
After a disappointing afternoon for United title chasers, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gave him a confidence vote. He trusted him to guide the St Mary’s line.
Martial was able to play deceitful because of his underwhelming campaign. His chances this season are unlikely to be as good if he doesn’t improve his game.
French newspaper L’Equipe are reporting tonight that Martial received a late offer from Lyon to join the Ligue 1 club on loan but he has decided to snub the move.
Solskjaer spoke out in support of Martial’s 5-1 win over Leeds.
Solskjaer said, “As we’ve stated before, we really rate Anthony.” He said that last season was not good, there were injuries and he had lost some form. The season before, however, was a great season.
“If Anthony takes all the penalties or Marcus Rashford would have taken all of the penalties last season, that’s an additional 10-15 goals for a centre forward, but we’ve got Bruno Ferrandes who is so confident with pens that it’s impossible to take that from him.
Anthony is very confident. He has that extra bit of determination when he sees me in training.
Martial was injured while serving on French international duty and missed 10 of the last league matches.
He failed to improve on his 23 goals for United, which was his best campaign in English football so far.
Solskjaer was asked if he would entertain Martial offers when he was quizzed about it.
Solskjaer stated, “I would not be surprised if others teams targeted Anthony. He’s very very good player.” He is hungry, determined and strong and has returned to the game ready to show his quality and fitness.
He said that last season was difficult for him. You can still see the grit in his teeth. We’re glad he is up to the challenge. He plays for Man Utd and he isn’t afraid of it. “He’s proven doubters wrong many times.”
