After the departure of Lionel Messi, Barcelona has given the No 10 shirt to Ansu Fati. Messi wore the shirt since 2008. However, it was not worn after his departure to Argentina in 2008.
Messi quit the Camp Nou after learning that the boyhood club couldn’t afford to retain their star player despite an offer from Argentina to cut 50% of his salary.
Many expected that the No. 10 shirt would be retired in Messi’s honor after Messi made 778 appearances with the Catalan giants. He scored 672 goals, won 34 trophies and had 778 games.
Ronald Koeman and his side tried to find the right number to reassign it, but they failed. They handed it over to Fati.
Although the 18-year old has only made 31 appearances in Barcelona’s career, Barcelona hopes he will be their next great forward.
Fati was 10 years old when he joined the Barcelona academy. Six years later, he made his debut in the first Barcelona team.
The Spaniard, who was 16 years old and had been playing for Barcelona since he was 304 days old, scored the first goal of his career.
Fati, who had a breakthrough season in 2019/20 was named to the first campaign team.
After tearing the meniscus in his left knee during a match against Real Betic in November 2020, the Spain national had to have surgery. He was unable to return to work until the end of last month.
Fati is now on track to complete training and will want to be back on the pitch to prove that he can meet all the demands of the No.10 shirt.
Fati, the new heir of the throne was revealed in a Twitter video. He was seen wearing the club’s brand new kit and his name on it.
Barcelona issued an official statement to justify their decision. It read, “Ansu fati has a new number of shirt.”
The young Barca striker will wear the number 22, 17 and 10 jerseys. This famous shirt was worn previously by legendary players like Rivaldo, Leo Messi, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo.
The article continued, “Despite only 18 years old and still recovering after injury, Ansu fati is part of Barca’s history as record-breakers and with the Spanish national team.”
After being persuaded by the Royal Spanish Football Federation to change his loyalty and give up his Bissau-Guinean citizenship, Fati made international debut on August 2020.
The winger became Spain’s youngest goal scorer in September 2020 after several games.
In the Nations League against Ukraine, in the 32nd minutes, he came in from the left and hit a powerful strike in the far corner. This broke the record of 95 years.
