Writer/director Kay Cannon (perhaps best-known for her work with New Girl and Pitch Perfect), delivers high production values and solid comedy in Amazon’s 2021 adaptation. It stars Billie Porter and Nicholas Galitzine as well as Idina Menzel and Pierce Brosnan. Cannon’s version of the title lacks elegance or heart, although it has some wonderful covers and a catchy song in Cabello’s “Million to One” pop tune.

Kathy Najimy, the Evil Stepmother, is also there. This 65-minute treat is stuffed with stuffed toys that are sure to sell.

It has both the visual integrity of The Lion King (2019), but also the modern narrative skills of Mulan (2021). This winning combination helps the film’s star-studded cast shine. Lily James plays a stunning Cinderella opposite Richard Madden’s prince charming. Cate Blanchett is the true star of the show, as she plays the role of a wicked Stepmother. Her performance will continue to be the best.

This adaptation is the best. Based on Gail Carson Levine’s YA novel, Ella Empoweredexpands the original Cinderella story by many means. A curse similar to Sleeping Beauty but with obedience rather than narcolepsy. There’s also a group of mythical creatures that rebel against the King. And even a cover of “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”, complete with stunning choreography. Anne Hathaway is the star of one her most famous roles.

This adaptation is the best. Every After is a title from the ’90s that has been so loved and so specific to its time it can be difficult to recall it having anything to do Cinderella. But it does. This historical romance is directed by Andy Tennant and stars Drew Barrymore playing Danielle de Barbarac as a young orphan in Renaissance-era France. Danielle lives with Rodmilla de Ghent, her evil stepmother. Anjelica Hudson plays Anjelica Huston. She faces an uncertain future, until art and love free her. Although this story may seem a little dark for young children, adults will love its complex themes and melancholy.
