Ebor legend Sonnyboyliston won Classic glory at the Comer Group International Irish St Leger.
Johnny Murtagh, just three weeks after his York handicap victory, climbed up to Group One under Ben Coen.
Few were able to score a decisive blow with Colin Keane and Amhran Na Bhfiann setting an intense search from flag-fall.
The leader was weakened in the home straight which meant Twilight Payment, the Melbourne Cup winner, was in front of Sonnyboyliston (4-1), who arrived strong on the scene.
Twilight Payment was not willing to give up without fighting, but Coen’s mount continued finding pressure and was three quarters of an inch longer than the horse that passed the post.
Coen stated that he couldn’t ask for it to be any better. He jumped, and got a beautiful tow in the race. It became a true staying race, and the lad continues to improve and find a way win.
He keeps finding new ways to help us, and that’s something I will never forget.
“This year is my first full-time year as Johnny’s number one jockey. We have had some good spins in England but this group One winner was something I wanted.
It is impossible to imagine it being a Classic, and Johnny would be proud.
