It occurred shortly before 7 a.m. on the clockwise carriageway, just after junction 1A of the A206 Dartford. The delay is estimated at around 90 minutes.
Tailbacks can extend up to nine miles.
According to reports, the collision involved both a crane and a truck.
After the accident, three lanes were shut down. However, they’ve been opened again.
Insulate Britain, an offshoot from Extinction Rebellion, staged sit-down protests at Junction 3 in Swanley, Kent; Junction 6 in Godstone, Surrey; Junction 14 in Heathrow Terminal 5 Junction 20 in Kings Langley, Hertfordshire and Junction 31 in Purfleet, Essex.
One driver tried to pull a protester off of the road.
Protest began Monday morning at 8 a.m. and continued until noon.
