After pointing out things that he said, Mark David Chapman (25-year-old security officer from Honolulu in Hawaii) killed him.
What is the reason John Lennon was killed?
John Lennon was shot five times at his New York City home, The Dakota. Four of the shots hit the back. Chapman then wrote a statement inside a 1951 copy of JD Slinger’s novel The Catcher in The Rye.
Before signing the document, he wrote: “This statement is mine,” and “Holden Caulfield”, the title of the protagonist.
Later, Chapman said that he was “enraged” by Lennon’s comment in 1966 where he stated the band had “become more popular than Jesus.”
He explained that he did not like the lyrics to the later songs. Lennon, he said, was a “phony”, a term he used frequently in the book. He lived an extravagant lifestyle and sang about being content without possessions.

Chapman was convicted of murder and remains in Wende Correctional Facility.
It was said that Chapman murdered Lennon in 2020 because he was angry and jealous of the star’s lifestyle.
According to transcripts from court hearings, obtained by ABC, he also claimed he was looking for “glory,” according to ABC’s transcripts.
According to the convicted murderer, “At that time, my thought was that he had all this money and lived in this lovely apartment. He is also into music, which represents a more careful lifestyle, more generous lifestyle.”
Chapman continued: “He was in the book. His name was very well-known. He was a great man and I did not kill him for his personality. He was a man of integrity. He was an icon. His words were something we now can all speak about and that’s an icon.
He said, “I assassinated [him], to use your words earlier because he was very very, extremely, very famous. That’s all the reason I was seeking self-glory. Very selfish.
“I would like to emphasize that, and add this. This was a very selfish act. She was hurt. It’s something I keep in my mind all the time.”
Chapman said that the gun was purchased by him three months before the shooting.
To go to New York City, he left Hawaii with his wife and said that he wanted to “find himself”.
