Mamma Mia 3: Star shares bittersweet update on much-desired sequel – ‘It’s a nightmare’

It’s been four years since Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again hit cinemas and ABBA fans have been desperate for even more ever since. Rumours first started to spring up in 2020 leading to sequel star Lily James saying: “I would do 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9,10. I’m down. Signed, sealed, delivered, I’m theirs.” Still, nothing has been confirmed, but a producer did say that it was “meant to be a trilogy.” Now Christine Baranski is adding to the speculation, though did admit it was still a long way off.

Baranski’s Tanya Chesham-Leigh is a fan-favourite in both Mamma Mia! films and she’s the next in an ever-growing line of stars to comment on the possible third chapter in the franchise. Fans have been holding out hope for years that part three will be confirmed, though they may have longer to wait than originally expected.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Baranski has shared her hopes for Mamma Mia 3, responding to a fan theory in the process. Audiences have long assumed her character would have married following the events of the second film. This would be a drastic change for Tanya, who is usually preoccupied with pursuing younger men.

Keeping to character, the 69-year-old said: “Although by now she may be divorced – she may have gotten bored with this man.”

Currently starring in HBO’s The Gilded Age, the star said: “If we could go back and have the same amount of good fun and be on a Greek island together filming and dining together at night at some wonderful trattoria or taverna, I don’t think anybody would give you an argument.”

However, she did say that it is something that’s currently not on the cards. Both films brought together a star-studded ensemble cast, with many of the actors being some of the biggest names in Hollywood. Baranski added: “It’s a nightmare to get that sort of a cast together.”

There might be a different way to get the team together without worrying about the logistics of creating an entire film. The recent successes of the Harry Potter and Friends reunion specials could offer a template for the team – at least that’s what Baranski is hoping.

She said: “I always think wouldn’t it be fun just to get back together on that Greek island and maybe film all of us having dinner and telling the stories and singing all ABBA songs? And then just have it filmed as a great night out.”

Despite the lack of confirmation disappointing fans, there are plenty of reasons to be excited about another fully-fledged instalment. Speaking to the Daily Mail, Judy Craymer, one of the producers behind the two films gave fans the hope they were looking for.

Craymer explained: “I think one day there will be another film, because there’s meant to be a trilogy, you see. I know Universal would like me to do it.”

Following the release of the second movie, ABBA’s Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus came together and released a new album, Voyage, in 2021. Craymer hinted at wanting to use the then-upcoming tracks in a future film.

Ulvaeus revealed on Magic Radio how a third film could happen. It would entirely depend on the idea that would be pitched to them. The 76-year-old said: “But I probably said after the first film that there won’t be a second. So, you never know. But, you know, why we did the second film was that [Ol] Parker and Richard Curtis came up with this idea and that’s why we did it. So, if someone comes up with an idea for Mamma Mia 3 you know I’ll have a look at it. We’ll have a look at it.”
