Pete Smith, who is known for his roles in notable New Zealand films such as Once Were Warriors and The Piano, has sadly died after a number of health of issues according to reports. The Lord of the Rings actor’s death at 63 was confirmed by his son who explained that his father had been “sick for a long time”.

His son Poumau Papali’i-Smith said that the actor had been battling with dementia and kidney disease.

He told the Stuff news outlet: “For the last seven years he’d been on dialysis which took its toll on him over the years.

“Within the last two years, he was also diagnosed with dementia.”

He added: “We started doing dialysis at home but over the last few weeks he suffered an infection which he fought for the last four weeks.”

He said his father’s death was a great loss for the community.

The Lord of the Rings actor died at his home on Saturday, according to local reports.

Tributes have poured in for the beloved star on social media.

Twitter user, Rob Keb said: “Sad to hear the passing of Pete Smith today.”

Rena Owen commented: “A fellow Northlander, an uber-talented trailblazing Maori legend, a formidable colleague, forever a friend, and the best Uncle Dooley, ever! Pete Smith gone too soon. Condolences to all your loved ones.”
