Iowa chiropractor sentenced for sexually abusing children


A Des Moines chiropractor will spend decades behind bars after pleading guilty to sexually abusing children.A judge sentenced Joshua Hanisch to 20 years in prison for two counts of sex abuse and a drug charge.Hanisch lost his chiropractic license in 2020 when police accused him of sexually abusing six girls as young as 7 years old.According to criminal complaints, Hanisch touched a female who was under the age of 18 multiple times while she was receiving treatment in his Des Moines office in 2014.Ankeny police said detectives began investigating Hanisch after they were notified by the Iowa Department of Human Services of possible abuse.Police said they interviewed three victims, at which time they learned of three additional victims who were all under the age of 12.Hanisch was charged initially with three counts of second-degree sex abuse, two counts of assault with intent to commit sexual abuse and two counts of sexual exploitation of a minor.Police also charged Hanisch with possession of a controlled substance after serving warrants to his chiropractic business in Des Moines, Ankeny home and a home in Perry.As part of his sentencing, Hanisch will spend the rest of his life as a registered sex offender.
