Megan Barton-Hanson hits back at ’slut shamers’: ‘Sex workers get a hard time’

Former Love Island star Megan Barton-Hanson – who has previously spoken out about her disappointment over how sex workers are treated – has said she believes people “admire” her for “owning” her past.

In an exclusive chat with OK! at the last night’s Social Ikon launch event (24 March), Megan said: “For years, especially on reality TV women have always been portrayed as sluts or slut shamed for acting the way that men have.

“I feel like sex workers still get such a hard time in society, so I think to come out and own that people just admire that.”

Megan also told us that she didn’t want to be “going over the old boring stuff”, like her dalliance with TOWIE star James Lock. Instead, she wanted to speak about her podcast (You Come First), her VICE column and the talk she delivered at Oxford University.

“I feel like my talk at Oxford was the biggest thing for me,” she admits. “It was amazing. I never thought going on Love Island and coming out people would want to hear what I’m saying and value my opinion so much”

And Megan attributes that value to her authenticity.

She explained: “When your’e honest people can’t fault you. I’m not the most academic person, I’m not the most knowledgable person but anything I say, I’ve lived.

“I feel like you can’t fault someone when they’re speaking from experience firstly and when they’re just owning who they are.”

Megan was 20 when she got into sex work after leaving her job as a PA where she claims she’d work long hours for “hardly any money.”

After spending a night at a strip club, Megan said she saw women “living their best lives, having fun and making money.”

In an interview with The Tab, Megan, 28, opened up about how people she knew from school would come and “laugh” at her.

“I had horrendous slut shaming,” she said.

“There will be a lot of judgement but you’ve just got to be thick skinned, and if you wanna do it be you. At the end of the day you can’t please everyone so you’ve just got to do what makes you happy.”

Megan is now doing sex work again, producing content for her large following on Only Fans.

We spoke to Megan at the launch party for Social Ikon – a new content platform like Only Fans that allows creators from the worlds of modelling, reality and fitness to “securely publish content and maximise their revenues.”
