Puberty Can Be Tough For Boys – I Hope My Book Helps Them

I’m so excited to reveal the cover of my latest book, Growing Up For Boys: Everything You Need To Know, which will be out in May. It was such a journey for me.

I learnt things that will help me be a better parent – and gained empathy for what boys go through during puberty.

Even though they don’t have things like periods, boys still have their own challenges. I think it’s often felt that girls have a much harder time of it, but it’s tough for boys, too.

The response to the girls’ book was incredible, and I was so happy. It can feel quite scary putting yourself out there and opening yourself up to criticism.

I was worried about what would happen if people didn’t like the book, or didn’t get it.

A lot of it is taken from my own experience of being a teenager, so it felt like quite a big risk to put that out there. But I couldn’t have hoped for a better response, so I’m crossing my fingers it’s the same with the boys’ book.

While writing it, I couldn’t help but think that boys might need a book like this more than girls.

Generally speaking, girls are slightly better at talking to their peers and parents about things, whereas boys are more likely to try and deal with problems on their own.

I think quite a few teenage boys would find it difficult sitting down with their parents to ask about puberty.

I hope the book will help guide a conversation, or be a conversation starter, so boys can ask about things they may be worried about.

As well as the physical side, we also touch on psychological changes and encourage boys to speak out if they are struggling with their emotions or mental health.

I realised it was important to get a male outlook, so one of the people who helped me was Pete. He gave me some perspective on what growing up was like for him. Even things like shaving and knowing when you’re ready to start were so helpful.

Whether or not Theo will read it when he’s older I think will depend on how he is as a teenager. If he’s struggling to talk to me about something, then I would hope we could sit and read it together.

Rest In Peace, Tom

I was incredibly sad to see that Tom Parker passed away aged 33 after being diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2020.

I’ve been humbled by his courage, continuing to live life to the full.

He raised so much awareness and money for research and to support those going through the same thing. He was a true inspiration.

My thoughts go out to his wife Kelsey and their beautiful children, Aurelia and Bodhi. Rest in peace, Tom.

The Pain Of Endometriosis

Molly-Mae Hague has spoken about her painful battle with endometriosis, revealing that sex with boyfriend Tommy Fury can be “excruciating”.

Endometriosis is a condition where tissue that lines the womb grows in places such as the ovaries or fallopian tubes.

It can be debilitating and there are a range of symptoms.

As well as pain during sex, these can include painful periods, pain when going to the toilet and pain in the back and abdomen, which is more severe during a period.

If you have any of these symptoms, I would advise you to see your GP.

While there is no cure for the condition, there are treatments available to ease the symptoms.
