(ANSA) – ROME, JUN 13 – Italy’s Matteo Berrettini made a
winning return after two months out after a hand op by winning
the Stuttgart ATP 250 tournament by beating Scottish great Andy
Murray in three sets in the final.
He had already won the German grass-court tournament once
before, in 2019.
Berrettini beat former world no 1 Murray, who suffered an injury
that all but KO’d his serve towards the end of the match, by
6-4, 5-7, 6-3 in two hours and 40 minutes.
“When I decided to play Stuttgart I never thought I’d win
straight away,” said the 26-year-old Roman.
His win pushed him up to world no 10 and boosted his hopes of
taking part in the ATP Finals.
Before that, he is setting his sights on Wimbledon where he lost
in last year’s final to Serbian great Novak Djokovic. (ANSA).
