Could a delay to Harry’s book spell bad news for King Charles III?

Meghan Markle likes ‘control of the narrative’ says royal expert

Meghan Markle is regarded by some within the Royal Family as a “loose cannon” – and may even be planning to re-edit some of her scheduled podcasts to add sensitive details about the Queen’s funeral, a royal commentator has suggested. Meanwhile a delay to Prince Harry’s book is not necessarily good news for King Charles III, Jonathan Sacerdoti pointed out – because it might indicate a move by Prince Harry to do something similar.

Storm clouds have been gathering since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped back as frontline royals and relocated to the United States at the start of 2020.

Tensions then worsened after an explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey in which Meghan claimed one unnamed royal had speculated about the skin tone of unborn son Archie.

The royals managed to put on a united front throughout the ten-day mourning period which followed the Queen’s death on September 8, and Harry and Meghan even joined forces with their in-laws, the Prince and Princess of Wales, for a walkabout at Windsor during which they met crowds of well-wishers and read floral tributes.

However, journalist Mr Sacerdoti, whose credits include Fox News, Sky News and the BBC, suggested the rift was far from healed.

He told Express.co.uk: “I think the Royal Family does try to control what individual members of the family do in terms of publicity, I don’t think that is news to anyone.

“And I think they did presumably try to control what Harry and Meghan did when they were within the family.

“But I think now that they have left as working royals and have left the country, they obviously have much less control over them.

“And so to the Royal Family, at least Meghan may be a loose cannon because she is somebody that will respect the rules and requests and preferences of the Royal Family only as far as she feels she should.”

Both Meghan and Harry had made it plain that they were pursuing their “own agenda”, Mr Sacerdoti emphasised.

He continued: “I think they will try and make that balance as they see fit, but they may think that balance is struck in a different way from the Royal Family, that is the point.

“And that is their right, incidentally, they are under no obligation. It is just that people are judging them on where they choose to strike that balance.

“That is everybody’s prerogative, to judge them how we all feel they have done.”

Consequently, it was difficult to predict the couple’s next move, Mr Sacerdoti pointed out.

He said: “I don’t know if Meghan will re-edit and remake any podcasts – she may.

“We heard rumours that how Harry’s book will be delayed. I do not believe that is confirmed, but we have heard that rumour.

“Now there are various reasons why that could be. It could be out of respect for what’s going on now and they just feel it is not the appropriate time for any book from him to be coming out, while his father is settling in as the King or while the Queen has just recently passed away.

“It could be because there were things in the book that he now wishes to remove because he feels they are insensitive and so it will take some time to do that.

“Or it could be because he plans to put more in the book.”

Referring to the apparent wrangle over whether Harry would or would not be permitted to wear his military uniform on the day of the funeral, Mr Sacerdoti explained: “It would now seem to me that a behind-the-scenes account of the mourning period, the funeral, all of the debates about the uniform and things like that might well make very interesting extra material in the book.

“And again, that may cause trouble for the Royal Family depending on how he tells it and how much of it is true or is not true.

“Of course, it could also make things much better for them if he put some rumours to rest, said they were wrong and that the speculation’s been incorrect, and that could actually play out very well for the new King.

“I think we do have to give him the benefit of the doubt, wait and see.”

However, Mr Sacerdoti continued: “I certainly know that most people don’t expect him to be a peacemaker in the book.

“I think the reason he’s got this massive deal for the book is that publishers think they’re going to get the juicy details.

“So I assume that the book will be slightly revised to incorporate recent events and there’s no reason why it shouldn’t be within the framework of what the book is meant to represent.”
