M. Basketball Travels To Play At Duke On Saturday At 1:00 p.m.


TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida State, which has won three of its last four games, resumes play following the holiday break as it travels to play at No. 14/7 Duke on Saturday, December 31, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. at Cameron Indoor Stadium.  The Seminoles enter their game against Duke with a 2-1 record in ACC play – a win total that includes a victories over Louisville (December 10, 73-55) and Notre Dame (December 21, 73-72).  Florida State’s game against the Blue Devils is its third of the season against a nationally ranked opponent following games against current No. 1/1 Purdue (November 30, 59-69) and No. 12/13 Virginia (December 3, 57-62).  The Seminoles games against the Boilermakers and Cavaliers came when both teams were ranked in the top five in the nation in both national polls.  The Seminoles have played, or are scheduled to play six teams who are currently ranked or receiving votes in this week’s Associated Press Top-25 poll.  Following Saturday’s game at Duke, the Seminoles play host to Georgia Tech on January 7 at 1:00 p.m. at the Donald L. Tucker Center.

HAMILTON ON THE CUSP OF 400 FLORIDA STATE WINS; 600 OVERALL WINS
Florida State Head Coach Leonard Hamilton enters Saturday’s game against Duke on the verge of winning his 400th game as Florida State’s Head Coach, and his 600th game overall as a head coach.  He is the fifth winningest coach in ACC history with 399 career wins and ranks fifth in ACC history with 179 career ACC wins at Florida State.  Hamilton is just one shy of becoming the fifth coach in ACC history with 400 or more wins as a coach in the nation’s top conference for basketball.   Hamilton is looking to join a select group that consists of Mike Krzyzewski, Duke (1,129 wins), Dean Smith of North Carolina (879 wins), Roy Williams of North Carolina (485 wins) and Gary Williams of Maryland (461 wins).

FLORIDA STATE’S CORHEN NAMED ACC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Florida State freshman Cam Corhen, who helped lead Florida State to a win over Notre Dame in its only game last week, was named the ACC Rookie of the Week by the conference office.  Corhen scored his career-high of 18 points in leading Florida State to its second ACC win of the season over the Fighting Irish.  The Seminoles are now 2-1 in league play heading into a New Year’s Eve matchup against No. 14/17 Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium with the tip time set for 1:00 p.m. It’s the first ACC Rookie of the Week honor for Corhen, who has earned three starting assignments, including in Florida State’s victory over Notre Dame.  Corhen totaled eight of his 18 points in the second half against Notre Dame on a near-perfect shooting half from the field (4 of 5) in 16 of 20 minutes played.  He also totaled seven rebounds (one off of his career high) and added a career-high 2 assists in the win over Notre Dame.  Corhen’s 18 points and seven rebounds rank as his career-best statistics during the first three ACC games of his career.

CLEVELAND ENTERS GAME AT DUKE WITH THREE CONSECUTIVE DOUBLE DOUBLE EFFORTS
Sophomore Matthew Cleveland, a nominee for the prestigious Julius Erving Award as the nation’s top shooting forward, enters Saturday’s game against Duke with three consecutive double double scoring and rebounding efforts (16-10 against USC Upstate on December 13; 23-13 against St. John’s on December 17 and 19 and 12 against Notre Dame.  He is looking to become the first Seminole with four consecutive double double efforts since Douglas Edwards totaled four consecutive double doubles during the 1992-93 season.

…Defeat Duke and gain a win against Duke in Cameron Indoor Stadium for the first time since January 21, 2012 when the Seminoles won 76-73 on a buzzer-beating 3-point shot by Michael Snaer;
…Defeat Duke and gain a win over a nationally ranked Duke team for the 10th time in school history.  The Seminole most recently defeated a Duke team ranked in the top 25 on January 18, 2022 with a 79-78 win in overtime at the Donald L. Tucker Center in Tallahassee.

HAMILTON, FLORIDA STATE WITH TWO NATIONAL HISTORICAL RECORDS
…Speaking to the ability of Head Coach Leonard Hamilton and how he develops talent, Hamilton has won an NCAA record 55 games over ranked teams while his teams were unranked.  Hamilton’s 55th win over a ranked team as the coach of an unranked team came as a 79-78 overtime win over Duke on January 18, 2022.
…Under Head Coach Leonard Hamilton, the Seminoles have won a NCAA record 13 consecutive overtime games.  The streak began with a 101-90 double overtime win over Syracuse on January 13, 2018;

FLORIDA STATE WITH 14 VICTORIES OVER AP TOP 25 TEAMS IN LAST FOUR SEASONS
Florida State enters Saturday’s game against No. 14/17 Duke with 14 victories over nationally ranked opponents since the start of the 2018-19 season.  The Seminoles won a school-record seven games against nationally ranked opponents during the 2016-17 season and have defeated a school-record 58 nationally ranked opponents under head coach Leonard Hamilton.  Included in the list of victories over nationally ranked teams since the beginning of the 2018-19 season is a 79-78 overtime win over Duke on January 18, 2022.  Florida State’s most recent win over a nationally ranked team on the road came on January 4, 2020 at Louisville.

SEMINOLES’ COLLEGE BASKETBALL RECORD OVERTIME WINNING STREAK
Florida State enters Saturday’s game against No. 14/17 Duke having won an NCAA record 13 consecutive overtime games.  The Seminoles defeated Duke, 79-78, in overtime on January 18, 2022, in Tallahassee for its all-time college basketball record 13th consecutive overtime victory.  The Seminoles have won each of their overtime decisions since a 101-90 double overtime win over Syracuse on January 13, 2018 in a game played at the Donald L. Tucker Center in Tallahassee.

NOTING FLORIDA STATE
Florida State enters Saturday’s game at Duke having won three of its last four games and two consecutive ACC games.  The Seminoles play their fourth ACC game of the month of December – only Florida State, Miami and NC State played (or will play) four ACC games in the month of December to begin the 2022-23 season.

FLORIDA STATE HANDLES THE BASKETBALL IN VICTORY OVER NOTRE DAME
Florida State limited its’ turnovers to a season-low five in its victory over Notre Dame on December 21 in Tallahassee.  The Seminoles’ five turnovers (two in the first half and three in the second half) helped Florida State limit the Fighting Irish to just seven points off of turnovers and to just six fast break points.  Florida State’s five turnovers in his victory over Notre Dame were the freest by a Florida State team since also totaling five turnovers in its 79-78 overtime victory over Duke at the Donald L. Tucker Center on January 18, 2022.

SEMINOLES WITH DOUBLE FIGURE ASISTS TOTAL IN WIN OVER NOTRE DAME
Florida State totaled 15 assists against only five turnovers for a season-best 3:1 assist:turnover ratio in its 73-72 win over Notre Dame on December 21.  The Seminoles have earned double figure assists in 13 of their first 14 games with single figure turnovers in five of their 14 games.

FLORIDA STATE SCORING
Florida State has scored at least 73 points and is averaging 76.8 points scored per game in its last four games (307 total points) as compared to averaging 65.5 points per game in their first 10 games of the season (655 total points).  The Seminoles reached the 70 point plateau in just three of their first 10 games with 81 points coming in their 81-72 win over Mercer on November 21, 2022.
