We are less than a week away from what should be one of the most entertaining sporting events in recent memory — even with the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The Match: Champions for Charity” is a team-match golf competition, played between the pairings of Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning and Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady. It should be a welcome distraction in a world that is missing sports, especially considering it pits four of the most accomplished athletes in their respective sports in for a friendly round of golf.
But, as the name suggests, this meeting is more than just a meeting of all-time greats: It’s also a way of raising money for coronavirus relief efforts — a competitive means to a worthy end.
With that, here’s everything you need to know about the Tiger-Manning-Mickelson-Brady matchup in “The Match,” including time, date, format, odds and charitable efforts.

Where is ‘The Match’ in 2020?
- Location: Medalist Golf Club (Hobe Sound, Fla).
The Match will be held at the Medalist Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Fla. By the time the match takes place, Florida will be in the “Full Phase 1” portion of its plan to reopen the state, which allows professional sports venues to open for games, events and training.
Per a release by the PGA Tour, “tournament organizers are working with state and local government and public health officials on competition and production logistics to ensure the event follows safety and health protocols.”
‘The Match: Champions for Charity’ format
The competition will feature team match-play between Woods and Manning and Mickelson and Brady in an 18-hole tournament. The front nine will be played in a “best ball” format, one in which the lowest score for one team is used in the official scoring. The back nine will use a “modified alternate shot” format.
Per the PGA Tour, “the unique combination of formats is aimed to provide an entertaining mix of strategy, team collaboration and consequence to nearly every shot.”
The PGA Tour also said The Match will include a set of on-course challenges to raise additional charitable funds, much like Woods and Mickelson’s first match in 2018. The first of those will occur on the fifth hole, where golfers may only use one club.
The Match purse 2020: How much money will be raised for charity?
Woods, Manning, Mickelson and Brady will collectively donate $ 10 million to benefit COVID-19 relief. It will also include a partnership with the “All In Challenge,” — a digital fundraising effort that incentivize donations with potential “once-in-a-lifetime experiences” from sports, music and entertainment figures.
The “All In Challenge” is currently offering 18 holes of golf with Phil Mickelson and private putting lessons from Woods as potential prizes to auctions on its site.
Odds for Tiger Woods-Peyton Manning vs. Tom Brady-Phil Mickelson golf match
As of Monday, oddsmakers have Tiger and Manning listed as favorites at -230 odds. Mickelson and Brady opened at +190.
Who won the Tiger vs. Phil match in 2018?
Despite odds favoring the Tiger-Manning pairing, it was Mickelson who won the original Match in November 2018. Mickelson entered that competition, held at the Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas, as a +160 underdog. After tying Woods through 18 holes, he finally pulled through in the fourth playoff hole.
Mickelson had to play from behind for 11 out of 18 holes in the original tournament; after winning his $ 200,000 bet that he’d open the match with a birdie, Mickelson played 1-up on Woods from the second through sixth holes. He finally pulled even on Hole 7 before going back 1-up on Holes 8 and 9. Mickelson started Hole 10 in much the same fashion before evening the score and taking a one-shot lead against Tiger on Holes 11 and 12, respectively. The two were all square on 13 and 14, though Mickelson fell behind a shot on 15 and 16. He evened the score on 17 and 18 to take the tournament to a playoff.

Is Tom Brady good at golf?
Brady won’t give up his day job anytime soon, but he’s still a decent golfer, reportedly playing to an 8.1 handicap.
Back in 2017 — when he was still quarterback with the Patriots — he was awarded membership of The Country Club at Brookline in Massachusetts, which hosted the 1913 U.S. Open Championship win by caddie Francis Ouimet. Now in Tampa, Brady has been granted membership at the Seminole Golf Club, ranked No. 34 by Golf.com in the top 100 courses in the world.
Other notable golf accomplishments from Brady include winning the Michel Jordan Celebrity Invitational in 2006 (he was paired with Jordan, himself a notoriously competitive golfer). Brady has also played in several pro-ams over the years. That includes the 2014 Pebble Beach Pro-Am, where in Round 3 he sunk a 10-foot putt to eagle on the par-5 second hole:
And, if you’re curious as to how he looks on the course, here’s a side-by-side look at his swing compared to Manning, Mickelson and Tiger:
So yeah, he’s definitely better than Charles Barkley swinging clubs.
Is Peyton Manning good at golf?
Manning reportedly plays at a 6.4 handicap, slightly better than Brady’s. Like Brady, Manning also regularly plays in pro-ams; he finished ninth in the 2020 Pebble Beach Pro-Am (which Brady missed out on). There, he sunk a lengthy putt for a net eagle — downhill.
It should also be noted that Manning may have a slight edge in the fact he has teamed up with Tiger before: The two played together at the 2018 and ’19 Memorial Pro-Am, where he sunk an 18-foot birdie on the 18th hole.
