In addition, a person at the scene claimed on Twitter a fight had broken out after the collision took place.
The tailbacks led some road users to reverse down the A13 while others attempted U-turns.
Highways England confirmed the closure of the A13 and the A13 eastbound exit for M25/A282.
The agency said the A13 is not expected to reopen until around 6am this morning, and that the A13 eastbound exit for the M25/A282 could be closed until 6:30am.
However, Twitter user Saad Fayyaz said the A13 is now reopen, though the junction is still shut. They also claimed there had been a “possible life-changing injury” at the scene.
They added: “Reports of crime scene as a fight broke out after the Road Traffic Collision.”
It is not clear at the time of writing what caused the collision or the fight, or how many people were involved.
The accident occurred on the A13 eastbound between the junctions with the A1306 Aveley and the M25.

Essex Roads Policing are currently investigating. They have not released a statement.
Highways England said late last night: “There are 30-minute delays on the approach to this A13/M25 incident above usual journey times spanning 2 miles. Average speeds on approach to the incident are 37 mph.”
Accounts from road users suggest the disruption has caused long tailbacks.
Twitter user Anya Dutton claimed she had not moved in over 90 minutes following the accident.
She said: “3 lanes fully stationary, about 500 yards off the M25 A14 junction”.
Twitter user Zainabs263 said: “It’s been well over 2 hours now. Are you going to let us move or what?”

A fight reportedly broke out at the scene
Several road users decided to leave their cars and walk around due to tonight’s mild temperatures.
Video footage taken since shows traffic moving slowly with users saying “finally”.
The A13 eastbound was closed just over a week ago due to another incident also near to Aveley.
The road closures are expected until around 6am this morning
On Sunday September 6, a large oil spill spread across the carriageway following the breakdown of a lorry at around 7am.
It affected traffic between Dagenham and M25, with road users having to be diverted via the A1306 Arterial Road before joining the M25 at junction 31.
Traffic did not return to normal until around 1pm that afternoon.
