Aldi vs Lidl: Cheapest budget supermarket revealed for price and quality of products

Which? said: “We checked the prices of more than 100 items, from own-brand yoghurts and vegetables to Head & Shoulders shampoo and Nutella chocolate spread.”

They said that discounters Aldi and Lidl were “unsurprisingly,” the cheapest two supermarkets out of all the ones analysed, coming in at just two pounds difference.

However, while Aldi was the cheapest supermarket overall, some products were still cheaper at Lidl.

Comparing this to Lidl, Knorr Vegetable Stock Pot (4x28g), were priced at £1.49 in Aldi but in rival Lidl they were just 99p.

However, this part of the survey could not analyse Lidl and Aldi due to the smaller and frequently chaining range of branded goods they sell.

While Aldi came in cheaper as the overall supermarket, many shoppers suggest that Lidl is now the favoured discounted supermarket as they offer a better selection of branded items which are still a lot cheaper than other shops.

Another recent which? survey revealed that Asda was the cheapest supermarket for the month of May due to the large amount of discounts and offers that the store had.

This is the third time in a row that Asda has topped the table for the most affordable weekly shop

Fans of the supermarket have shared how Asda’s own brand products taste exactly the same as branded products but are a fraction of the price.

One shopper revealed that they managed to get their weekly shop to an affordable price due to the amount of reduced products that Asda put out every evening at around 6:30pm.

Due to the cheaply priced products already in stores like Aldi and Lidl, they rarely have discounted items and so shoppers may be able to pick up a bargain in Asda when the food is reduced in the evenings.

However as it stands, Aldi is still the cheapest supermarket in the UK overall with its own brand products still coming in at a cheaper price than its rival Lidl.
