Alien life search: New alien hunting tool debuts – ‘There are probably many others’

Since the first discovery of an exoplanet 25 years ago, more than 4,300 more have been identified, with new worlds discovered almost every two days or so.

A minority of these alien worlds are telluric, meaning they are mainly made-up of rocks, like our home.

While many other factors are required for an exoplanet to be hospitable to life as we know it, this is one element astronomers are using to hone their search among an infinite Universe.

Gas spectroscopy to detect biosignatures in planets’ atmospheres is an ever-increasingly important part in the search for alien life.
