Anthony Joshua has blasted Deontay Wilder for “dragging my name through the mud” following the American’s admission that he received an offer to fight him in 2019.

Joshua and Wilder were on a collision course to lock horns whilst both men were undefeated world heavyweight champions, something which is no longer the case.

A showdown between the pair never materialised, however, with their respective management teams accusing one another of avoiding it.

Back in March of last year, Wilder said: “Four months of negotiations and they knew they didn’t want the fight. Stop. What more do I have to do for people?”

The Bronze Bomber instead turned his attention to a rematch with AJ’s domestic rival Tyson Fury, who snatched the WBC title from his grasp last February after being controversially denied it in their opening split-decision draw 14 months earlier.

And in a tweet aimed at Fury over the weekend, Wilder finally let slip that he was the one avoiding Joshua.

He wrote to the Gypsy King: “You know I was offered more money to fight Joshua than I was getting to fight you. Again being a man of my word, I fought you.”

Though while he is relieved the truth is out, Joshua has slammed Wilder for “trying to make me look like a bad person”.

“It makes the ultimate sense,” the unified heavyweight champion told Sky Sports.

“It’s hard because at the time when people are talking and you see lots of media stuff, you start to believe what that person is saying.

“When time goes by, naturally the truth will always reveal itself.

“I get a lot of stick but I take it with a pinch of salt.

“He admitted it. We made him a lucrative offer but he wanted to face Fury

“So be it. If that’s what he wanted to do, fine. But he dragged my name through the mud.

Wilder opted for a rematch with Tyson Fury instead of a lucrative showdown with AJ

“While Wilder was trying to make me look like a bad person, that I didn’t want to enhance the sport, or fight certain fighters, I just had to roll with the punches.

“He has come out and said it himself. We offered him a really good deal but he wanted to fight Fury.

“People can take it how they want, and see what the truth is now.”

Eddie Hearn responded as well on social media back on Saturday, tweeting: “I thought AJ ducked you?”
