Arsenal defeat to Man City shows size of Mikel Arteta task as Champions League dream dead

Only signed a year ago from Chelsea, Luiz’s contract expires in less than two weeks’ time and he might have to agree to a heavily-restructured contract if he is to stay.

This performance perhaps showed why he shouldn’t, although Arteta spoke in January of the 33-year-old’s “powerful” leadership, experience and personality.

His error saw him equal the Premier League record for most penalties conceded by an individual in a single season, with this his fourth.

By contrast, he conceded just three in 160 English top-flight matches for Chelsea. He has averaged a red card once every 13 games for Arsenal, and a penalty conceded every 6.5 games.

If Luiz’s contract is not extended, his suspension – if upheld – will mean this was his final match for the north London club, and it will provide a sorry finish to what has been a tumultuous 12 months at Arsenal.
