Asteroid alert: Astronomer snaps a 990m 'potentially hazardous' asteroid on approach today 1

“At the imaging time, the potentially hazardous asteroid (PHA) (162082) 1998 HL1 was at about 6.6 millions of km from the Earth and it was heading to the mentioned close approach, when it will be one millions of km closer than here.”

Despite the asteroid’s deceptively small appearance in the image, Asteroid HL1 poses a potential threat to Earth.

Dr Masi dubbed HL1 a “potentially hazardous asteroid” or PHA due to its sheer size and close approach.

Space agency NASA estimates HL1 measures somewhere in the range of 1,443ft to 3,248ft (440m to 990m) in diameter.
